The Challenge

A national research laboratory used search within a product lifecycle management application supporting approximately 400 engineers. The application helped users find engineering documents and components, but its existing autosuggest behavior did not meet expectations.

The laboratory needed specialist search expertise to translate user requirements into appropriate indexing, suggestion, and autocomplete configurations. A subsequent application upgrade required those customizations to be reviewed for compatibility with a newer search platform version.

The laboratory also planned a centralized observability environment to make logs and metrics from applications, databases, and infrastructure easier to search, correlate, and analyze.

Innovent’s Approach

Innovent’s initial engagement focused on the engineering search experience. Working sessions established the desired autosuggest behavior and representative use cases, providing a basis for solution design and configuration.

The team developed search configurations aligned with those requirements and delivered them to the laboratory’s developers. Innovent also supported implementation and testing, connecting the intended user experience with the configuration needed to produce it.

A subsequent engagement addressed continuity through the application upgrade. Innovent provided guidance on configuration changes required for compatibility with the newer search version and supported the development team as it deployed the modifications.

Innovent also provided search architecture and deployment guidance for the planned observability platform. This covered ingestion of logs and metrics, indexing and retention strategies, scalability, resilience, and infrastructure planning.

The team additionally advised on approaches for consolidating search requests across the engineering search and observability technologies, considering how the two platforms could contribute to a combined search experience.

The Result

Innovent provided tailored search configurations and implementation support to address the laboratory’s autosuggest requirements in an application serving approximately 400 engineers.

The subsequent work supported configuration compatibility through the application upgrade. Innovent also provided architectural recommendations for centralizing operational logs and metrics, including guidance on ingestion, retention, and deployment.

Together, the engagements connected improvements to an established engineering search application with planning for broader operational search and analysis.
