Actuate Honors Four Companies for Excellence in Business Intelligence

Bank of America, Deltek, Lincoln Financial Distributors and Travelers Express/MoneyGram Recognized as Leaders in Deploying Information Applications

Actuate International User Conference, Las Vegas, Nev., - Aug. 5, 2003 - Actuate Corporation (NASDAQ:ACTU), the world leader in scalable Business Intelligence Applications, honored four companies for achieving breakthrough innovations and cost savings with their Actuate-based information applications. The "Actuate Excellence Award" winners for 2003 are Bank of America, Deltek, Lincoln Financial Distributors, and Travelers Express/MoneyGram. These customers have deployed world-class information applications and are successfully leveraging them across the enterprise to maximize return on investment, enhance efficiency and productivity, strengthen customer relationships and increase their competitive advantage. The award winners were announced at the Actuate International User Conference, in Las Vegas, NV. The categories and their winners are:

• Return on Actuate Award: Presented to Travelers Express/MoneyGram for ability to demonstrate the greatest return on their investment (ROI) in Actuate technology.
• Customer Innovation Award: Presented to Bank of America and to Lincoln Financial Distributors for their innovative solutions built on the Actuate Information Application Platform.
• Innovation Award (OEM): Presented to Deltek for the most innovative Information Application built on Actuate's Information Application Platform.

Winner of the Actuate Customer Innovation Award, EAGLS, Bank of America's web-based card management and reporting system, offers detailed transaction and expense data online to tens of thousands of users on demand. The system, based on Actuate's Information Application Platform gives users the ability to monitor activity, export thousands of data elements into a variety of formats, create general ledger accounting interfaces, handle expense reports and generate any of 90 standard reports. EAGLS also allows for flexible cost allocation and provides detailed transaction information and account statements with an extensive archive.

Lincoln Financial Distributors

"By combining Actuate's powerful reporting capabilities with cutting edge wireless technology, Lincoln Financial Distributors (LFD), the wholesaling arm of Lincoln Financial Group, is able to deliver up to date sales information to executives and sales managers," said Miko Pickett, Assistant Vice President of Lincoln Financial Distributors. "LFD sales management doesn't need to find a computer and an Internet connection to look at key information, it is right there on their Blackberry PDA. LFD has taken advantage of Actuate's XML and page level security capabilities to deliver only the parts of the report to the Blackberry that are relevant to a particular sales manager. Actuate allows us to build a report once and use the information anywhere - Blackberry, PocketPC, web, browser, PDF, XML, etc.) This approach reduces effort and costs from development through deployment."

Winner of Actuate's Customer Innovation Award, Lincoln Financial Distributors has implemented an innovative approach for distributing critical sales information to their management team. LFD, with the systems integration expertise and wireless toolkit provided by Axis Group, an Actuate Gold Partner, has combined wireless technology with Actuate's powerful XML capabilities to create a uniquely efficient method for extracting data from a report and
displaying it on a Blackberry PDA.

The LFD Wireless Reporting Application takes advantage of all the features and capabilities of the Actuate Information Application Platform, including scalable, secure and timely information delivery. The system was built using industry standard web technologies including XML and XSLT, ensuring portability across any wireless device. The system leverages the existing investment in the Actuate Information Application Platform; clients do not need two applications in order to implement wireless reporting! The system is designed to "build-once-anduse-twice", Actuate-generated reports. By generating an XML stream from the Actuate report, wireless users will have access to the identical report information provided to other report users. This means that once an Actuate report is developed and tested, the same report, or subset of the report (based on device screen size), will be sent
to the wireless handheld device. No additional coding or testing is required. The information delivered to the wireless device is sourced directly from the information produced on the Actuate iServer. This guarantees identical information wherever it is displayed.

Travelers Express/MoneyGram

"We are pleased to receive the Actuate award for return on investment," said Emmy Varness, project manager at Travelers Express/MoneyGram, "After two years of operation, we have reduced our monthly printing and postage costs approximately $38,000 per month or $456,000 per year on this application alone. In addition, our largest agents have been very enthusiastic about the program: approximately 75% of these key clients have eliminated mail delivery in favor of electronic report delivery using Actuate."

Travelers Express/MoneyGram is the largest processor of money orders in the U.S. and an expanding global leader in the payment services industry. From Consumer money orders and money transfers to official checks and large-scale item processing for corporate clients and financial institutions, Travelers Express/MoneyGram provides the technology, service and expertise to move money effectively and efficiently. Travelers Express uses approximately 50,000 agents as Money Order outlets. Each agent receives daily or weekly reports on transaction settlement. Agents range in size from hundreds of outlets to small mom and pop stores.

Prior to the introduction of Actuate-based reporting, Travelers Express/MoneyGram (TEMG) outsourced the printing and distribution of their Money Order settlement reports. Based on actual June 2001 invoices, TEMG was spending approximately $70,000 per month on the printing and postage for the Money Order - Sales Order Summary report. Innovent Solutions, an Actuate Gold Certified Partner, worked with the TEMG staff to create an Actuate report publication system to duplicate and deliver the printed report through secure web-based applications. Based on voluntary agent enrollment for the system, TEMG has reduced their costs to $32,000 per month, a savings of $38,000.

Since participation in the new Internet delivery of the reports was made entirely voluntary, TEMG wanted to provide an incentive for agents to switch to Internet report delivery. Innovent Solutions and TEMG developed technology that enabled automatic download of report content as Excel data using Actuate's XML export functionality. Now agents can receive five Excel worksheets with one click of a button. These worksheets can be used to analyze and reconcile the agent's internal accounting systems with the TEMG reports. Using this system, one of the TEMG agents has reported a labor savings of almost eight hours each week.
