ACTUATE SECURITY INTEGRATION

Our security solutions address the issue of authorization and authentication using external security repositories. Single signon eliminates the need for application users, who have already been authenticated by a web application or desktop sign-in, to reenter username and password information when accessing Actuate. For authorization, Actuate user and role information can be stored and accessed externally from the Actuate iServer, typically in LDAP, Active Directory, Novell Directory Server or relational databases, eliminating the need for multiple security repositories. Our solutions utilize configuration files and custom program logic to determine the rules for the application of the role and user information.

Another option that can be utilized is an integrated security solution whereby a trust relationship is established between front-end applications and the Actuate iServer. Using this trust relationship allows each application to maintain a unique user / role relationship that is communicated to Actuate by each individual application. The benefits of this approach lies in the fact that each application can have its own security schema and each application can communicate to Actuate how to use that information.

This approach although more complicated to implement provides advantages over external security in that a) it eliminates 2 trips to security repository - more efficient and b) there is no need to duplicate complicated application security logic into the Actuate security schema. Using integrated security, responsibility for the Actuate iServer security is transferred to the front-end web applications.
